Kate Mayhook

Kate Mayhook was hired in 2015 as the head coach of the D'Youville women's lacrosse program to lead the program from club level to NCAA Division III. Mayhook also serves as the director of finances and logistics for the athletic department.


2020 saw D'Youville earn three players earn weekly awards from the NEAC and AMCC before the cancellation of the season, as Riley Riedel (Offensive Player of the Week) and Jordyn James (Defensive Player of the Week) swept the weekly awards from both conferences on March 9, while Tiffany Cristofanelli won AMCC Offensive Player of the Week honors the following week.


The 2019 season featured another large step by Mayhook's squad, as the team improved to a 7-10 record and narrowly missed the program's first berth into the NEAC postseason. The Red and Black had three players named to All-NEAC Teams, as Megan Dulniak and Julia Prychodko earned Second Team honors while Alison Gareis received a Third Team seletion.


In her third season at the helm, the women's lacrosse program took a giant leap forward under Mayhook. The team won their first game in program history to start the 2018 season with a 13-3 victory over rival Hilbert, going on to win three additional games. In total, six player were named IWLS Team selections and two earned All-AMCC honors.


Mayhook brought to D'Youville a great deal of coaching and playing experience at the collegiate level.


Mayhook was the head girl’s lacrosse coach at Nardin Academy from 2007 to 2015. In her time at Nardin, Mayhook led the team to multiple winning seasons, including one regular-season championship and three league finals. Since 2013, she has also coached at the youth level, working with girls between the ages of 6-14.


Before Nardin, Mayhook was an assistant coach at her alma mater, Colgate, and helped lead the Raiders to the first-ever Patriot League Tournament, losing in overtime of the semifinals to Lafayette.


During her playing career, Mayhook was a standout for the Raiders' women’s lacrosse team. She is a four-time IWLCA All-Northeast Region selection as well as a two-time Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year and the conference's 1997 Rookie of the Year. Mayhook (nee Manzella) was also an All-Patriot League First Team selection three times, was the conference's Most Outstanding Midfielder from 1997 to 1999 and was the league's Most Outstanding Attack Player in 2000. A team captain in 2000, Mayhook was named as a member of the Patriot League's 1990s All-Decade Team and finished her career second in program history in goals (159) and points (207).


In September of 2011, Mayhook was honored for her outstanding athletic achievements by her alma mater as she was inducted into the Colgate Athletic Hall of Honor.


Mayhook is also an accomplished marathon runner, competing in the Buffalo Marathon (2002, 2003), Chicago Marathon (2003), Miami Marathon (2007), Niagara Falls Marathon (2012) and Boston Marathon (2014).


Mayhook graduated from Colgate with her bachelor's of arts and history.

Ellen Newton

Ellen Newton is in her third season as an assistant coach for the D'Youville women's lacrosse program.


Newton joined the Saints after wrapping up a four-year playing career for Canisius College's women's lacrosse team. During her time in the Blue and Gold, she compiled a 10.65 goals against average along with a 0.461 save percentage. Newton capped off her career with an incredible performance on Senior Day, recording a career-high 15 saves in a Griffs win.


As a junior in 2018, Newton was selected as a national finalist for the Yeardley Reynolds Love Unsung Hero Award, which recognizes six women's lacrosse players througout all of Division I who help their teams achieve success in ways that cannot be measured in goals, saves, or ground balls. She also earned the atheltic department's Community Service Award in 2018, as well as the Heart of a Griffin Award in 2019.


Off the field, Ellen has worked at Cradle Beach in Angola with children from disadvantaged communities and children with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Newton was pushed towards the field of Occupational Therapy after she led mission trips to Krakow, Poland, where she worked at the Dzielo Pomocy Dzieciom, a Children's Home for abandoned, abused and neglected children.


Newton is a 2019 graduate of Canisius, where she earned her bachelor's degree in health and wellness. She is currently in her second year of the master's program for occupational therapy at D'Youville.
